Theme Customizer – Video & Article

Learn how to edit your theme settings and customize some of your theme options.

Please note that the options in the Customizer section of your website vary significantly from theme to theme.

  • Log into your website.
  • From your dashboard, hover over Appearance and click on Customize.
  • Alternatively, click on Customize from the front-end of your website in the top, black admin bar.
  • Note that you’ll see a visual preview of the changes you make, but not all options will be pre-viewable, and your changes won’t go live until you click on Publish. Also note that in most cases you can’t undo your changes or go back to a previous version, so make sure to document things like colors, just in case you want to revert back to what you originally had.
  • First, you’ll see the name of the theme you have installed. If you are ever interested in changing themes or upgrading, please submit a support ticket or email us at support@worshiptimes.org so we can discuss your options
  • There are some options that should be accessible by all themes, though the actual settings in them may vary – these include Site Identity, Menus, Widgets, Homepage Settings, The Events Calendar, Theme Settings, and Additional CSS.
  • Site Identity
    • In some themes, you can upload a logo and change its size here, but for many themes, there is no logo upload, or you can upload a header image instead, or the logo is located elsewhere.
    • Here you can also see your site title and your tagline. Your theme determines if it’s displayed and how.
    • You can also upload a site icon here. This is the favicon that is displayed in the tab at the top of your browser.
  • Colors (older themes) – not all themes have this option and each theme varies as to where and how those color options appear.
  • Header Media (older themes) – in some themes this might just say header or header image. For some themes, this is where you could put a logo; for others, this is the top image on your homepage.
  • Background Image (older themes) – on some themes this is the image at the top of the homepage, but on other themes, this is the background image for your entire site.
  • Menus – this is simply another way to edit your menus, and it functions exactly the same as if you hover over Appearance and click on Menus from your dashboard.
  • Widgets – this is just another way to edit the widget areas on your site, often located in places like your sidebar, your homepage, and your footer. It functions the same as if you were to hover over Appearance and click on Widgets from your dashboard. Note that the widget areas vary from theme to theme.
  • Homepage Settings – your homepage displays your latest posts or a static page. What your theme does with this settings varies, so it’s best to stick with what your builder has selected and submit a support ticket if you want to make a change.
  • The Events Calendar – contains settings specific to your calendar and events pages. You can edit colors of various elements under each option.
  • Theme Settings (varies)
    • Site Layout – if your theme allows, you may have options to select a different type of layout for all of your content on all of your pages. Usually this is content with a right sidebar, content with the left sidebar, or full with content with no sidebar.
    • Content Archives – if you run a blog or have a lot of posts, this is where you select how those are displayed. You can select the content, the type of content; you can limit the number of characters; you can select to display the featured image or not, what you’d like the featured image size to be and its alignment; and then the type of pagination, for if you have more posts than what is selected to display in your settings.

As always, if you have any questions, please submit a support ticket from your website or email us at support@worshiptimes.org.
