Navigation Menus – Video & Article

Learn how to edit the menu bar on your WordPress website.

Please note that adding a new page to your site does not automatically add it to the menu. All navigation menus are handled manually under Appearance –> Menus.

  • If you’re logged in and on a page, you can just hover over your Site Title and then go to Menus.
  • Alternatively, if you’re on the dashboard, you can find it in Appearance –> Menus.
  • The menu structure is on the right side. Submenus are indented to the right just a bit.
  • On the left side, there are the items that can be added to the menu. If you do not see all possible items, you need to go up to Screen Options in the top-right corner of your screen and then select the additional items you want to be able to add.
  • Add a page
    • View your most recent pages, view all, or search.
    • Select the page.
    • Click on Add to Menu, which will add it to the bottom of the menu.
    • Drag-and-drop it up-down or left-right to move it to another location in the menu.
  • You can also add posts, locations, events, publications, staff members, and custom links, useful for linking to an external site.
    • PRO TIP: If you do not see the option to “Open link in a new tab,” click on “Screen Options” in the top-right corner of your screen and make sure that under “Show advanced menu properties,” “Link Target” is checked.
  • Within each menu item, click on it to open its settings.
    • One option is to open the link in a new tab. Best practice for outside links and for documents is to open them in a new tab so that users don’t have to completely navigate away from your website.
  • Save the menu.

Depending on your theme, you can have a lot of different options of where your menu is going to be displayed. At the very bottom of your menu page, there are some menu settings. Primary Navigation Menu and Secondary Navigation Menu are the most common. The options and where these are located are determined directly by your theme.

You can also add a custom menu to any of your widget areas under Appearance –> Widgets.

Create as many menus as you need, and navigate between them using the dropdown found at the top of your menu page.
